Renewal of central office administrators' contracts is on the agenda at the USD 489 Board of Education work session at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Toepfer Board Room in Rockwell Administration Center, 323 W. 12th.
The contracts will be discussed Monday, but it's uncertain whether any action by the board will be needed at the board's regular meeting Feb. 17.
Superintendent Dean Katt signed a contract in December for a salary of $147,456 plus benefits, so his contract isn't up for renewal.
BOE President Greg Schwartz said last month the actual dollar amount of Katt's salary is higher than former superintendent Will Roth's salary, but it's the same cost to the district.
Roth "was getting a family health insurance, and we just rolled the amount into salary" for Katt, who is getting a single health plan, Schwartz said.
That leaves the renewal of contracts for Mark Hauptman, assistant superintendent of special services, and Shanna Dinkel, interim director of curriculum.
For the 2014-15 school year, Hauptman will be in the second year of a two-year contract.
Katt said he isn't recommending extending Hauptman's contract, but people shouldn't "read anything into that. I'm happy with him."
It just reflects a move in the district to one-year contracts.
"No one is going to be let go," Katt said.
Katt said he wasn't sure how the board would proceed on Dinkel's contract. Dinkel, formerly Hays Middle School assistant principal, was named interim curriculum director last fall, so her contract began then. The only discussion point Katt said he was aware of was whether her contract should be for 11 or 12 months.
Since board policy calls for renewing central office administrations, it's more a matter of "giving assurance they'll (Hauptman and Dinkel) have a job next year."
Hauptman's salary is $111,092 and Dinkel's is $87,802.
Work session discussion topics include a SMART goal review, budget update, information on the Kansas Association of School Boards school board self-evaluation process, and principals' contracts and their format in the future.
Principals' contracts will be acted upon at the first regular meeting in March.
Other agenda topics in addition to central office administrators' contracts include the 2014-15 school calendar, revising language from board clerk to director of accounting in policy EG, approving the board president's signature on the Service Employees International Union negotiated agreement and the representation letter from the 2013-14 school audit.
