DERBY -- Aaron Cornell, who hadn't hit a home with the Larks since 2011, now has three in 2013.
Cornell, a third-year Lark, blasted two Friday in Derby, leading Hays to an 8-4 Jayhawk League victory against the Derby Twins.
The win was a bounce-back after Hays (15-2 overall, 11-2 JL) had its 11-game win streak snapped Wednesday against the Liberal Bee Jays.
Cornell finished 2 for 5 Friday with four RBIs and a pair of homers. The first was a three-run shot in the fifth inning, and the second a solo homer in the seventh.
Zair Koeiman and Desmond Roberts also homered. Cornell's three-run shot and Roberts' solo shot were the four-run fifth inning as Hays pulled away from a 1-1 tie to claim the lead for good.
Derby dropped to 8-7, 6-7 in the league. The two were scheduled to play again at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Jason Zgardowksi (3-0) pitched seven innings on one-run ball to get the win. Zgardowski struck out four with two walks, and surrendered four hits. Dalton Viner finished the game. He gave up three earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Nick Goza was due up to start for Hays on Saturday.
Koeiman had four hits and scored two runs, and Clayton Garland finished 3 for 5.
Elvin Rodriguez, playing his final game of his four-year Lark career, finished 1 for 3 with a run scored. Rodriguez left the Larks on Saturday after signing to play independent league ball with the Rockford Aviators (Loves Park, Ill.) of the Frontier League.
