By Michele Boy It is early afternoon and I am hunkered down weapon in hand. I keep one eye open as I try to doze. But I can't sleep. I must protect my baby and the enemy is charging at me in a relentless pursuit of my flesh. No I am not in a foxhole involved is a war in a foreign country. I am in my bed trying to nap with my daughter. Two of the thousands of flies that have blanketed the area have managed to enter my bedroom. And their incessant buzzing around my daughter's face threatens her sleep and my sanity. So I try to nod off with a fly swatter in my hand. A few zzzs later and bzzzz bzzzz, I am shooing them away. Their endless appetite and continuous buzzing has local residents trying to take cover. As many in Hamilton county will tell you the flies are destroying our mental health. You can't cook in your kitchen or walk outside without them taunting you. Bzzz Bzzzz. Many have abandoned their front doors. At the farm, flies can cover your pants black instantaneously. My farmer husband who works till dark in summers has abandoned his work prepping a drill due to fly bites. Why are the flies so bad? Not really sure. One might think it was because we have feed yards and dairies but the flies have been around for as long as anyone can remember. In a rare moment of ingenuity I market fly swatters to our rural population for a fundraiser to help our local school purchase a digital marquee. To date I have sold over 500. The community is suddenly aware of their helplessness as they drive their trucks cars and tractors. Orders pour in. We'll take 10 we'll take 12. I am capitalizing on everyone's misery at $3.00 or 2 for $5.00. Coleman Sprinkler covers the costs to allow us to have all the money go to the marquee. As you drive around the county you see people waving their hands in desperation yet surety they will likely get into an accident. I must ask my insurance agent if that is considered an act of God?
