DODGE CITY — The lone win for the Hays Eagles and the Hays Monarchs Legion baseball teams in the first two days of the Dodge City Tournament came from the Monarchs — and it came against the Eagles.

The Monarchs defeated the Eagles 3-2 in the early game Saturday, while both teams lost to Russell and the Butler County Cubs in other action the first two days.

The Monarchs scored the walk-off victory against the Eagles when Trenton Mayo hit a hard ground ball to Palmer Hutchison and an error helped Cole Zimmerman score the winning run.

That came after the Eagles had scored a run in the sixth to tie the game at two. Grant Coffman scored from third on a line out to left field by Cole Murphy.

The Monarchs had a 2-0 lead in the third before a catcher’s interference call put the Eagles on the board for the first time. The Monarchs scored twice in the second to take the early lead after a Zimmerman single scored Creighton Renz and a Mayo double scored Zimmerman.

Zimmerman got the complete-game win while Trey Riggs took the complete-game loss in a pitchers’ duel. Zimmerman surrendered just two hits and struck out nine with four walks. Riggs gave up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

The Monarchs went on to fall 4-3 in their late game Saturday to Russell after Russell scored two runs in the seventh on a walkoff single.

The Eagles fell in a high-scoring affair Saturday, 14-11, to the Butler County Cubs. The Monarchs fell 9-1 to the Cubs on Friday, while the Eagles lost 3-2 to Russell on Friday after giving up three runs through the fifth and sixth innings.

Each team is slated to finish the tournament Sunday in Dodge City.
