JUNCTION CITY -- The Hays Larks dropped a non-league, team-pitched game Wednesday against the Junction City Brigade, 4-3 after a walk-off hit for the Brigade in the ninth.
Clayton Garland, normally an outfielder and the Larks' top hitter, took the loss as he pitched a third of an inning and gave up the winning base hit.
Hays (26-10) had battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the eighth inning on a two-RBI home run for Brent Gillespie. The Larks' run prior came in the fifth on a solo shot for Mackenzie Handel, his fifth homer of the summer.
Logan DeRosier, Alex Frey, David Owen, Chandler Hawkins and Ian Bentley also saw time on the mound with DeRosier doing the bulk with three innings in the start. The Larks surrendered just four hits, but Junction City took a 3-0 lead in the third with two runs on an RBI groundout and a fly out.
The two teams meet again today at 7 p.m. at Larks Park, and Hays returns to Jayhawk League play with three games this weekend against Derby at home. Friday, Saturday and Sunday's games begin at 7 p.m.
