The Hays Larks moved to 3-0, sweeping the season-opening series against the Denver Cougars at Larks Park.

Hays won 8-4 Sunday in the series finale, posting five runs in the third inning to erase a 4-1 lead, then never falling behind.

Right hander Blake Johnston pitched the first two innings for Hays, allowing four runs (three earned) with six walks before Alex Ellison came on in relief to earn the victory in four innings. Ellison, who just wrapped up his sophomore season with Fort Hays State University, surrendered two hits with two strikeouts in four shutout innings.

Jake McDavid and Claudio Valencia also saw time.

Zair Koeiman drove in a pair of runs going 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored in the game. Koeeman's night included a solo home run in the fifth inning to extend the lead. Austin Jarvis also drove in a pair of runs, giving Hays its first lead in the third.

Saturday, the Larks won Game 2 of the series, 9-1 behind two RBIs each from Mackenzie Handel and Joe Betcher.

Patrick Flanagan picked up the win in four innings, allowing no runs on two hits.

The Larks begin Jayhawk League play with a 7 p.m. game today at Dodge City (1-1). The Athletics lost 9-4 in their Jayhawk League opener Sunday at Liberal.
