DODGE CITY — For the third time in four years, the Ellis High School baseball team is headed to the state tournament.

The Railers, unbeaten and the top seed, took out second-seeded Spearville, 3-0, in Wednesday’s regional championship at Cavalier Field. The Railers moved to 18-0 with the win and advance to next week’s Class 2-1A state tourney in Great Bend, where Ellis fell 5-0 last season in the first round to eventual runner-up Medicine Lodge.

Wednesday’s regional final was the closest game the Railers have had since defeating Class 3A state qualifier TMP-Marian in Hays, 6-4 and 8-7 on April 11. Since, the Railers have allowed just one run, in a 9-1 win against Scott City. It also was the lowest scoring game of the season for the Railers.
