Hays High wrestlers send nine to state

SALINA -- Nine Hays High School wrestlers qualified for this week's Class 5A state finale at Wichita-Hartman Arena.
The Indians competed Saturday in the Class 5A regional, hosted by Salina South.
Russ Kohl will head to state at 106 pounds for the Indians, along with seniors Luke Madden (285), Cash Drylie (220), and Derek Stiles (126). Sophomore Preston Weigel qualified at 170 pounds, while Chandler Rule will compete at state at 195 pounds, and Leroy Franco at 145. Kyler Meyers qualified at 160 pounds, and Ethan Deterding at 152.
Hays High senior Kevin Arnhold, who was in arguably the regional's toughest bracket, suffered a 7-3 setback in the consolation quarterfinals to end his season. Arnhold, who was ranked fourth in Class 5A, lost to fifth-ranked Patrick Burrus of Wichita/Kapaun Mt. Carmel in his final match. His first loss was to No. 3-ranked Quinton Harrison of Newton.

Class 4A
Colby will send 10 wrestlers to the state finale this week at the Bicentennial Center in Salina.
At 106 pounds, Colby sophomore David Mainus finished second behind Abilene's Zane Baugh by a 5-3 decision.
Junior Dustin Reed moved to 40-1 by beating McPherson's Tim Prescott, 3-2 in the 120-pound title match. At 132, Eagle senior Michael Tubbs finished in fourth place, while senior Konnor Kriss claimed the regional title at 138 pounds with a 40-2 record.
Colby junior Quade Woofter finished second at 145 pounds, and junior teammate Macen Schull was fourth at 152.
At 160, Eagle sophomore Andrew Taylor was fourth place as well.
At 170, junior Beau Brown wrestled for a regional title Saturday and qualified for state.
At 195, Colby junior Troy Quenzer was fourth, and at 285, junior Zell Bieberle wrestled for a title Saturday night.
