Area roundup: Plainville, La Crosse on collision course in district play

PLAINVILLE -- It seems the unbeaten Plainville and unbeaten La Crosse High School football teams are in a collision course in Class 2-1A, District 6. Both teams picked up convincing victories again Friday, and are one win away from an unbeaten Week 9 showdown for the district championship. Plainville took care of Ellinwood on Friday, winning 51-6 to move to 7-0 on the year and 3-0 in District 6 play. Plainville put up all of its points in the first half. The Cardinals, off to their best start since 1994, host Valley Heights (2-5) in non-district action this week, while La Crosse plays at Ellinwood.

La CROSSE -- The La Crosse Leopards put up an astounding 509 rushing yards during Friday's contest, getting at least 100 yards rushing from three different backs. Levi Morss put up 198 yards on 19 carries, while Tayler Stull added 124 on 10 carries, and Kip Keeley chipped in 108 on eight carries. La Crosse led 35-7 at halftime and never looked back, picking off three Ell-Saline passes, and holding the Cardinals to under 200 yards of offense.

GRAINFIELD -- Wheatland-Grinnell kept its hope alive for a playoff berth with a Division II, District 7 win at home over Weskan. The Thunderhawks put up 268 yards on the ground, holding Weskan to just 75 total yards in the blowout win. The Thunderhawks play at Golden Plains this week to try and keep pace with Sharon Springs (6-1) for the second spot in the district. Wheatland-Grinnell at Golden Plains is the HDN Area Game of the Week.

KENSINGTON -- The Thunder Ridge Longhorns have not given up a touchdown since a Week 4 win against Otis-Bison, and rolled to a mercy-rule victory over Northern Valley on Friday. The Huskies have lost three straight since starting 3-1. Joel Struckhoff had 179 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries for Thunder Ridge, which has now outscored its opponents 328-30. The Longhorns play at Palco (4-3) on Friday. Northern Valley plays host to Wilson.

VICTORIA -- Since starting the season 4-0, the Palco Roosters have now lost three straight, while Victoria, which lost its firs two games, has put together five straight victories. The Knights picked up a Division II, District 8 win against the Roosters, and moved to 4-0 in Division II, District 8, setting up a Week 9 district title match with Thunder Ridge. The Knights are in non-district action this week against Central Plains. The Knights posted 301 rushing yards in the win Friday, 117 coming from Dalton Dreiling, and 114 from Clayton Roth.

SMITH CENTER -- The Smith Center Redmen won their Class 3A, District 14 opener behind another oustanding game from running back Truitt Kuhlmann in the final home game of the regular season. Kuhlmann rushed for 300 yards on 27 carries with four TDs as the Redmen handed Beloit just its second loss of the season. Kuhlmann had 300 of Smith Center's 342 yards on the ground. Kuhlmann now has 1,387 yards on 114 carries with 22 touchdowns, accounting for more than half of Smith Center's total offense. The Redmen play at Minneapolis this week.

STOCKTON -- The Stockton Tigers picked up their first victory of the season as they stepped out of Eight-Man, Divsion I, District 7 action. Stockton led Word of Life 36-0 at halftime as Christian Hamel passed for four touchdowns. Stockton also scored twice on special teams. The Tigers play at Hoxie on Friday.

WaKEENEY -- The Trego Golden Eagles put up the most points they've scored since switching to Eight-Man a season ago, and pulled away from Hill City in the second half. Hill City, last year's Eight-Man, Division I state runner-up, scored at least 36 points for the third straight game, and got 113 rushing yards from Dylan Anderson and 263 as a team, but couldn't slow down Trego in the second half. Anderson also passed for 176 yards and two scores. Hill City hosts Quinter in district action this week, while Trego takes on district leader Osborne on the road.

The Bulldogs won their fifth straight since a season-opening loss to unbeaten Downs-Lakeside. The Bulldogs host Trego this week.

RUSSELL -- Clay Center scored on its first six possessions and rolled to its third victory of the season, 38-12, against Russell. Clay Center rushed rushed for 267 yards on the night, and led 31-0 at halftime of the Class 4A, District 16 opener. Russell (2-5) was led by 127 rushing yards and one score from Chance Pitcock.
