Chiefs' linebackers could share field

McClatchy-Tribune

The Kansas City Chiefs recently have been working on a defensive sub package that features their top four outside linebackers -- Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, Dee Ford and Josh Martin -- in a front next to nose tackle Dontari Poe.

On Monday, Hali was asked why defensive coordinator Bob Sutton might use such a package.

"Yeah, he's just using the pieces like it's chess and putting all his best players out there, allowing them to do what they do best," Hali said. "About five guys, six guys that can rush the passer. We call it a 'dog' front. He wants to see a bunch of dogs go out there."

The front featured Hali and Ford on the outside, with Martin and Houston inside closest to Poe.

Though all four are used to rushing from the outside, Hali said they don't have to make significant changes when they have to kick inside.

"I don't use a lot of speed being in there," Hali said. "I've been fortunate to play nose tackle, three technique, defensive end and linebacker since my Penn State days, so I'm able to play all those positions.

"When we had (Romeo Crennel) here, he put me sometimes head up over the nose, sometimes in the three technique, just because I love rushing. And that's what Bob is doing right now. If you can rush, you can rush against any of these guys."
