Quinter's opponents know the Bulldogs are going to use a full-court press.

Beating it is another thing.

Quinter forced 11 of Victoria's 23 turnovers in the first quarter, jumping out to a double-digit lead and never looking back in Saturday night's Class 1A boys' sub-state title game at Felten gym. The top-ranked Bulldogs won 66-38 to improve to 25-0 on the season and advance to this week's state tournament in Gross Memorial Coliseum. Quinter finished second at state last year.

"Kids really like to run that press, feed off that," Quinter coach John Crist said. "Feel like it gets us going."

Victoria coach Stuart Moeckel said his team handled the pressure better as the game went along, but ...

"The kids learned from their mistakes," Moeckel said. "By then, it was too late."

Thanks to the press and 11 points from senior guard Matt Bird, Quinter led 20-10 after the first quarter.

"It's the same thing they've done to every team," Moeckel said.

Bird, who scored 26 in Friday's semifinals, finished with 23 against Victoria (14-11).

"Games like these, I try to get the team on the board right away," Bird said.

Quinter led 34-20 at halftime and 50-32 after three quarters.

"They're the best team we've played, by far," Moeckel said.

Senior center Scott Ochs added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Junior Kameron Dinkel led Victoria with 11 points and senior Garrett Dreiling added 10 points.

"Kids didn't quit the entire night," Moeckel said. "I told our seniors thanks for building another stone for our program."
