Eagles 1-2 in Blue Springs tourney

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. -- The Hays Eagles Legion baseball team picked up its first win in the Blue Springs, Mo., wood bat tournament on Thursday, then fell in Thursday's late contest.

The Eagles got a complete game from starter Layne Downing and defeated Lee's Summit, Mo., 7-5. The Eagles then lost 9-7 to Bellevue, Neb. Hays lost its opener, 4-2 to Jefferson City, Mo. on Wednesday, and sit at 24-8. Action continues today through the weekend.

In Thursday's win, Hays had to hold off a rally be Lee's Summit. The Eagles had a 7-0 lead, before giving up three runs in the fifth and two in the seventh, but held for the win,

Downing gave up seven runs (two earned) as the Eagles had two errors. Downing struck out nine and walked one. Zack Legleiter was 3 for 4 with two doubles, and scored once. Connor Rule drove in a pair of runs with a double. Marcus Altman finished 2 for 3 and scored a pair of runs.

In Thursday's loss, the Eagles attempted a rally with four runs in the seventh inning after trailing 9-3, but fell just short with two runners left on when the game ended on an unassisted double play at first base.

Brady Bieker took the complete-game loss. He gave up nine runs (none earned) on 10 hits. He struck out two and walked two.

Legleiter, Rule and Altman each had two hits with Rule collecting a double.
