PITTSBURG -- The Hays Eagles Legion baseball team's bid at a third straight state championship fell short during the weekend with back-to-back losses to Pittsburg Post 64.
The Eagles, after an 11-5 loss in Saturday's first title game, lost a 3-1 lead and fell 7-5 in Sunday's winner-take-all.
The Eagles cap their season with a 33-10 mark in the third season under head coach Brad Kelly.
In Sunday's loss, starter Layne Downing made it through four innings, and left with a 3-1 lead. He gave up one earned run on five hits with a strikeout and a walk. Reliever Kaden Rohr took the loss in the next two innings. He gave up five runs (three earned) after three Eagle errors to give Pittsburg the lead. Kade Parker and Brady Bieker pitched the final two innings.
Parker finished 2 for 4 and drove in a run. Trenton Henningsen was 1 for 4 with two RBI, and Zack Legleiter finished 2 for 4, scored two runs, and had a solo home run. The Eagles loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but left the tying run at second base.
Pittsburg advances to the National Region 4 tournament this week in Little Rock, Ark.
