Last week, Fort Hays State University baseball coach Steve Johnson sat outside a door leading into one of the back gyms at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Because of the winter storms, his team had three games cancelled and didn't know when it would play again. At that time, multiple possibilities existed.
The snow at Larks Park wasn't melting like it needed to. One day, senior closer Kyle Leroy said the players had a snowball fight. Other times, the players had put in hours trying to get the field ready for this weekend's home series against Missouri Southern State University.
MIAA bylaws state teams can play a series at either site. But all the games from a weekend series must be completed by Monday night. Games cannot be made up if it goes past Monday.
Finally, FHSU and Missouri Southern decided to switch the series to Joplin, Mo. and play a doubleheader today. The third contest of the three-game series will not be rescheduled. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. FHSU is 6-5 overall, 3-4 MIAA, while Missouri Southern stands at 6-3, 2-3 MIAA. This marks the Tigers' first game since Feb. 24., a 8-5 road loss at University of Central Oklahoma.
