ST JOSEPH, Mo. -- The eighth-seeded Fort Hays State University baseball team is down 1-0 in a three-game series to open the MIAA tournament.
The Tigers fell 9-1 to top-seeded Missouri Western State University.
Fort Hays fell to 23-21, while Mo. Western moved to 36-8.
The Tigers need a win in today's 1 p.m. game to stay alive in the tourney. In Saturady's game, Tayler Davis fell to 6-5 with the loss as the Griffons scored three runs through the first four innings. Then, Mo. Western put up three runs in the seventh to blow open the game.
Fort Hays plated its lone run in the eighth inning when Horace Johnson singled to center field to score Kelton Rule. It was one of 10 hits for the Tigers, but FHSU stranded nine runners. Rule finished the game 2 for 4. Johnson was 2 for 4, and Shane Wade posted a pair of hits as well.
If the Tigers can win today, the rubber match is slated for 3 p.m. Monday.
