FHSU baseball wins 12-11 at home

After struggling in the first three games of its four-game series with Missouri Western State University, the Fort Hays State University baseball team won the final game of the series 12-11 Sunday at Larks Park.
FHSU (26-22, 20-19 MIAA) traded blows with MWSU (33-15, 26-12 MIAA) for much of the game, as the lead changed six times.
Then junior catcher Shane Wade homered to left field to tie it at 11-11 and senior shortstop Sheldon Howell drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth. Senior closer Brett Macari (4-1) shut the door on the Griffons in the eighth and ninth, pitching 12⁄3 innings and allowing just a hit and a walk.
The Tigers hit 17-of-39 at the plate. Senior Andy Lewton started the game for the Tigers and lasted four innings. He gave up six runs, six hits and two walks.
FHSU be the No. 6 seed at the MIAA Baseball Tournament and will play No. 3 seed Missouri Southern State University (32-18, 23-17 MIAA) at 2:30 p.m. in the single-elimination opening round Thursday at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.
After the single-elimination format Thursday, the tournament becomes a double-elimination four-team format the rest of the way. If the Tigers win Thursday, they will play No. 1 seed University of Central Missouri (41-7, 34-4 MIAA) on Friday.
Missouri Southern swept FHSU early in the season at Joplin. and FHSU was 3-1 vs. UCM.
