RAPID CITY, S.D. -- The Fort Hays State University football team built a big cushion with a strong second half and went on to a 41-27 victory on the road Saturday against South Dakota School of Mines.
The Tigers scored 17 points in the third quarter to break open a 21-13 game, but surrendered two late touchdowns despite leading 41-13 in the fourth quarter.
The win moves the Tigers to 4-5 overall as Fort Hays returns to MIAA action Saturday in the home finale against University of Central Missouri.
The win is the third straight for the Tigers, who haven't lost since falling 20-17 to Lindenwood on Oct. 6. In the three victories, Fort Hays has posted at least 28 points and has scored a TD on defense. Saturday, the Tigers got a 75-yard TD return for a score on a blocked field goal attempt.
In other MIAA action Saturday, Northwest Missouri blasted Washburn 56-6 in Topeka to move to 8-1.
Pittsburg State snapped a two-game skid with a 20-6 win against Truman State and University of Nebraska-Kearney picked up its second win of the season with a 24-18 win against Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo.
