TAMPA, Fla. -- The Fort Hays State University softball team split a doubleheader Wednesday against No. 11 ranked University of Tampa (Fla.)
Fort Hays (8-2) won the opener in a pitchers dual, 1-0, but dropped Game 2, 2-1.
The Tigers' Maddie Holub and Tampa's Kayla Cox combined for 30 strikekouts in the opener as Cox struck out 19 and Holub 11. Holub allowed just three hits. FHSU's Bianca Adame reached base on an error in the seventh, and was brought in for the game's only run on a sacrifice fly by Danie Brinkmann.
In the nightcap, Tampa had a walk-off two-RBI double to win the game. Tiger freshman Paxton Duran was one out away from a 1-0 win. She allowed just two hits through six innings, but allowed two more in the seventh, including the winner.
The Tigers begin play in the NTC Spring Tourney at Clemont, Fla. with two games on Thursday.
