KEARNEY, Neb. -- The Fort Hays State University softball team, ranked No. 1 in the Central Region rankings and No. 11 in NCAA Division II, split a road conference doubleheader against University of Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday.

The Tigers won Game 1, 6-1, and lost Game 2, 14-13, in the season's highest scoring game. FHSU stands at 39-9, 19-5 MIAA.

In the first game, Holub struck out 11 Lopers and moved to 23-1 this season. She also recorded her 900th career strikeout. Holub also went 4 of 4 with four singles.

In the second game, UNK scored six runs in the first inning, including a grand slam. Freshman Paxton Duran collected just one out before Holub came back in. She allowed four runs on four hits in 2.2 innings. However, FHSU came back with three runs in the second and three more in the third. UNK scored one in the second and three in the third. FHSU scored two runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh, but UNK (11-29, 6-18 MIAA) tallied two runs in the sixth and seventh. The Lopers ended the game on a single and an error by FHSU sophomore center fielder Amanda Vaupel. Vaupel homered and freshman first baseman Tori Beltz homered twice.

Katlyn Kern, in her first appearance of the season, took the loss after she allowed four runs (three earned) in 3.2 innings.
