The Fort Hays State University softball team saw its season end Monday morning with the release of the NCAA Division II tournament bracket. The Tigers were ranked ninth in the last Central Region poll last week, one spot out of qualifying. No. 8 seed Arkansas Tech went 0-2 at the Great American Conference tournament, while FHSU went 1-2 at the MIAA tournament.
But Southern Arkansas, previously ranked No. 10 in the poll, stole a bid when they won the GAC conference title and received an automatic bid to the regional. Fort Hays finished the year 29-20 and in fourth place in the MIAA. The Tigers opened the year 14-5 and played .500 ball the rest of the way.
Central Arkansas earned the eighth and final seed and will play against No. 1 Winona State University in the first round.
Fort Hays defeated regional teams Minnesota State-Mankato and University of Central Oklahoma, but three losses combined to sub-.500 Lindenwood (Mo.) University (twice) and University of Nebraska-Kearney (once) late in the season hurt.
Plus, FHSU went 1-5 collectively against the three MIAA teams that made the field: Emporia State University, UCO and Missouri Western State University.
Emporia State received the No. 3 seed, while Missouri Western was fifth and UCO sixth.
The Tigers ended the year Friday afternoon at the MIAA tournament with a 5-4 loss to Lindenwood.
