Coming off winning the inaugural Kansas Cup last weekend, Fort Hays State University wrestling coach Chas Thompson was hoping his squad would be ready to go this weekend, with a pair of home duals.
No worries.
Fort Hays dominated Colorado School of Mines 35-12 in Saturday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual at Gross Memorial Coliseum. On Friday, the 15th-ranked Tigers beat 12th-ranked Western State (Colo.) College 27-10 in GMC.
Fort Hays (8-2 overall in duals) improved to 6-0 in the RMAC to remain in first place in the conference.
"I was worried about coming back after winning that tournament, having a big head," Thompson said. "I told them to respect your opponent.
'They have a tough squad, well-coached; they're young," Thompson said of Mines.
The match of the night was at 165 pounds, where Tiger senior Blake Malloy, ranked seventh in the nation, needed overtime to edge Oredigger sophomore Jordan Larsen, 5-3. The winning points came on a takedown just as the final seconds ticked off the clock in OT.
"Malloy completely outworked him," Thompson said. "That was the exciting match."
Other than that, it was business as usual.
Tiger sophomore Travis Kuhn started things off with a first-period pin over freshman Kyle McMinn.
Sophomore Aldon Isenberg, who got some mat time in place of junior Andre Harrison, ranked second in the nation at 141, made the most of his opportunity with a 13-2 major decision over sophomore Jesse Snider.
At 149 pounds, Tiger senior Levi Younkin cruised past sophomore Mick Ramsey to win 8-0, and Fort Hays senior 157-pounder Danny Grater pinned junior Ryan Sprackling in the first period.
Malloy got his win at 165 before intermission, then Mines (2-8 overall, 1-6 RMAC) got a forfeit win at 174. FHSU junior Chance Rencountre then defeated sophomore Bradley Price 6-0 at 184.
Tiger freshman Steven Kyler slipped past junior Brennen Knerr 3-1 at 197 pounds to give Fort Hays a 29-6 lead.
At 285 pounds, Tiger sophomore Justin Glenn made a tactical mistake in the third period of his match, and it cost him. Glenn was leading 1-0 late in the second period when the referee denied Glenn back points Thompson thought he deserved.
Thompson talked with the official between periods, but still didn't like the no-call.
"I just don't think he made the right call," Thompson said. "I said I thoght he had him long enough to get back points."
Thompson said Glenn would have wrestled more conservatively in the third period with a lead. Instead, it was 1-1 after an escape by Mines senior Bryan Stansbury. Glenn then went for a throw and instead was pinned.
"Justin shouldn't have tried that throw, got pinned," Thompson said. "Justin's still a sophomore wrestling; he's a work in progress."
The dual ended with Fort Hays senior Tommy Edgmon, ranked No. 4 at 125 pounds, winning by forfeit.
The Tigers went into Saturday's dual with the big win over Western State (6-4, 3-2), which thumped Fort Hays last season in Gunnison, Colo.
"We went up there last year, got our butts kicked," Thompson said. "We wanted to return the favor."
Edgmon at 125 and Kuhlman at 133 were one-point winners to start the dual, and Isenberg got a pin at 141 pounds. Younkin lost at 149 and Grater was upset at 157.
After intermission, Malloy won at 165 and senior Shawn Kuhlman got a win at 174. The Mountaineers were open at 184 to give the Tigers a 24-6 lead.
Kyler lost by major decision to the nation's fourth-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds before Glenn won the heavyweight match.
Fort Hays plays host to Chadron State (Neb.) College in anoher RMAC dual on Friday before three Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association teams come to town next Sunday. The Tigers will first wrestle Truman State (Mo.) University, then University of Central Missouri, capped by a dual against two-time NCAA II national champion University of Nebraska-Omaha.
