HILL CITY -- Hill City High School has routinely hosted Mid-Continent League and regional track and field meets. This year, Hill City was supposed to have the Class 2A regional meet.

Coach Keith Riley said the facility won't have regionals, but is expected to have its junior varsity meet April 28 and varsity competition May 12.

"It's just not in good enough shape for regional, so we are not going to host it," Riley said Friday.

Hill City has multiple cracks in the track and part of the pole vault runway has worn down to the asphalt. Riley, the head track coach since he came to Hill City in 1967, said Hill City first constructed the track for the 1970-71 school year. Before then, the Ringnecks had a grated dirt track. Riley said the track has been resurfaced several times during the decades, including a couple of seasons ago.

"We are trying to change our shot put ring," Riley said. "Our girls' discus ring, they are both cracked, and we have got to get those fixed. Our track is in really bad shape, though. They are going to have to do something with it, or we are not going to be able to have track meets here."

The Kansas State High School Activities Association website currently doesn't list the regional host sites. All baseball and softball regional sites have already been set, according to KSHSAA.

"The Regional Track and Field sites will be posted when all sites have been secured for all six classifications," the website reads.

"At this time, not all sites have been secured."

Ellis and WaKeeney-Trego, schools normally with Hill City for regional track, don't list a regional track host on their online school schedules. WaKeeney-Trego spent one year at Class 1A last spring, but will be 2A again this year.

"I would say WaKeeney or Smith Center is where I would guess right now," Riley said.
