Hays High School girls' basketball coach Kirk Maska thinks he will have a different team facing Garden City this time around.
Maska, in his first year as the Indians' coach, saw his team lose 76-40 to Garden City in the third game of the season, at the Hays City Shoot-Out. He thinks the Indians will give the Buffs a better test on Friday when the teams tip off at 6 p.m. in Garden City in Western Athletic Conference action. The boys' game will follow.
"We played them so early," Maska said. "I think we're a completely different team.
"They're a good ballclub, but I don't think they're going to shoot the ball that well," again, Maska added.
In the first meeting, Garden City got 12 points from Casey Curran as the Buffs shot 57 percent from the floor. Senior guard Carissa Wickham scored 12 to lead the Indians.
Hays High (1-1 WAC) is 4-10 overall after losing 71-36 at home against Salina South on Tuesday.
"We've got to work to keep getting better," Maska said.
Garden City is 5-7 overall and 2-1 in league play.
The Hays High boys (2-0 WAC) are 10-4 overall after holding off Salina South 56-51 on Tuesday.
Garden City's boys are 6-6 overall and 1-2 in WAC play. They are led by junior guard Cody Bernbeck, and also have back senior forward Chris Ruiz, who has recently returned from a thumb injury which sidelined him for several games.
"Garden's playing well, won by 16 and 20 points their last two games," Hays High coach Rick Keltner said. "Probably got their best player (Ruiz) healthy again."
