The Hays High School girls' basketball team can win the WAC title outright with a victory Tuesday night against Dodge City.
"We're going to try to win it at home against Dodge," Hays High coach Kirk Maska said.
The HHS boys, meanwhile, can spoil Dodge City's conference title hopes with a win over the Red Demons. Garden City is in first place in the WAC, with Dodge City in second.
"If we beat Dodge -- (Garden City coach) Jacy (Holloway) is a good friend of mine -- he wants us to try to help him out Tuesday night," HHS coach Rick Keltner said. "Hopefully, we're going to be a factor in the league race."
Hays High will play host to Dodge City on Senior Night Tuesday at the HHS gym. The girls' game starts at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.
The Hays High girls (14-4 overall, 6-0 WAC) are ranked seventh in Class 5A and have won six straight. The Indians won a defensive battle at Dodge City on Feb.7, claiming a 39-26 win.
Senior forward Paige Lunsford and junior forward Taylor Herman each scored 10 points for HHS, and Herman added five blocked shots in the first matchup with Dodge City. Lunsford leads the Indians in scoring at 13.6 points per game.
HHS held Dodge City (10-8, 4-2) to 17 percent shooting from the floor in the first meeting, and the Red Demons connected on 1 of 20 3-pointers. Senior guard Brenna Briggs, who was coming off a school-record 37-point performance, was held to three points.
"I think they'll shoot better than the last time, but we're going to prepare the same way we did," Maska said. "We're going to come out, play good defense, challenge every shot.
"Hopefully, the results are the same," he added.
Keltner hopes for a different result this time around against the Red Demons.
At Dodge City, Hays High trailed 18-4 after the first quarter in an eventual 45-31 loss.
Hays High (5-13, 1-5) committed 18 turnovers against the Red Demons' press and was 4-of-16 from 3-point range in another low-scoring conference game.
In six WAC games, the Indians have held their opponent under 50 points four times, and scored more than 50 points once.
In the first matchup, senior point guard Trey Hallman was held to eight points for Dodge City (9-9, 5-1).
"It's not an accident when you play people like Dodge or Garden, they're low-scoring games," Keltner said. "Both teams are pretty possession-conscious.
"In my experience, that's the way most tournament games are," he added. "I think it's good experience for us."
Junior guard Derek Bixenman leads Hays High in scoring at 11.1 points per game.
