Hays High boys fall to Concordia on Saturday

CONCORDIA -- The Hays High School boys' basketball team -- playing its second game in less than 24 hours -- was outscored by 15 points at the foul line Saturday in a 62-40 loss to Concordia.
Hays High cut the deficit to 38-31 on a 3-pointer by freshman Alex Delton early in the third quarter. But Concordia outscored HHS 13-2 the rest of the period to take a 51-33 lead.
The Indians scored the first four points fourth quarter to get within 14, but could get no closer.
Hays High (5-13), which lost at home to Garden City 55-49 on Friday night, trailed 14-9 after the first quarter. Concordia used an 11-0 run which started in the first quarter and ended in the second to take a 20-9 lead. Hays High later in the period went on a 10-4 run to trail 31-23 at halftime.
Freshman center Brady Werth scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the first half for Hays High. Delton, making his first start, added nine points.
Grant Holmes made 9-of-10 free throws on his way to a game-high 25 points for Concordia (14-5). The Panthers were 20 of 36 at the foul line, while HHS made 5-of-8 free throws.
Hays High will be home Tuesday against Dodge City in WAC action.
