HHS girls fall in first round at McPherson

McPherson -- The Hays High School girls' basketball team opened the 2014 Mid-American Classic Tournament, hosted by McPherson High School, with a 60-24 loss to Manhattan on Thursday.

Manhattan, No. 4 in Class 6A, overcame its own poor shooting performance (37.5 percent) by forcing the Indians into 30 turnovers and 27.8 percent shooting from the field. Manhattan held Hays High (0-11) to 11 points through the first three quarters, its largest lead coming at 53-13 early in the fourth quarter.

Audra Schmeidler led Hays High with eight points. Darby Price and Caroline Ballard led Manhattan with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Manhattan out-rebounded Hays High 45-27.

Hays High will now face Wichita Northwest (5-6) in the consolation semifinals today at 3 p.m. in McPherson, while Manhattan will play Shawnee Mission South at 6 p.m. in the winner's bracket.
