GREAT BEND -- Seven days removed from a blowout loss to Western Athletic Conference foe Great Bend, the Hays High School girls' basketball season came to an end Thursday at the hands of the same Panther team.
Great Bend started Thursday's Class 5A sub-state semifinal game on a 23-0 run, and never looked back in a 60-29 win, ending Hays High's season at 0-21.
Hays High scored all six of its first-quarter points at the free throw line, and didn't get a field goal until the 1 minute, 9 second mark of the second quarter. The Indians trailed 36-13 at halftime.
With the score 58-21 after the third, the fourth quarter was played under continuous clock per Kansas State High School Activities Association postseason rules.
Great Bend, ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, improved to 19-2 and will host Maize South on Saturday in the sub-state title game.
Junior Mattison Schlaefli and lone senior Haley Wells had eight points each to lead the Indians.
Morgan Harwood and Lauren Welsch scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, to lead the Panthers.
Great Bend's lone losses this season were to Riley-Riley County, the No. 2 ranked team in Class 3A, and Wichita South, top ranked and defending Class 6A state champion.
