SALINA --  The Hays High School boys' golf team took second place in the 14-team field at the Salina South Invitational on Friday, held at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. The Indians finished with a four-player team score of 315, while Maize High School took first with 299. Derby was third with 324.

Senior Kaden Beilman led Hays High with his 6-over par 76 to tie for fourth place. Also medaling (top 10) was Indian junior Nathan Romme, who took seventh place with a 77. Rounding out the team scoring was sophomore Payton Ruder's 79, a stroke away from medaling, while seniors Lane Clark, Chase Lynd and junior Cash Hobson each shot 83 to tie for 20th.

Leading the field was Maize's Kale Reynolds, who broke a state record by shooting a 7-under 63. He broke the previous mark of 64 held by Sterling's Michael Gelleman from 2011 (third on the list is Hays High's Nick VonLintel, who shot 65, also in 2011). Reynolds' 63 was 11 strokes ahead of second place on Friday, a 74 shot by Sacred Heart's Brooks Brown. Derby's Jeremy Dunham was third with a 75.

Following Thursday's tournament at Dodge City, Hays High now is three tournaments into its five-tournament WAC schedule. The Indians currently sit in first place with 12.5 points, with Dodge City right behind with 12 points. Garden City (10.5), Great Bend (7) and Liberal (3) finish out the standings.

Garden City's Taylor Larsen leads the Western Athletic Conference with 38 points, having shot rounds of 80, 77 and 76 so far. Dodge City's Levi Bone, who shot a 67 to win the Dodge City Invitational on Thursday, is in second place with 30 points despite missing the first tournament at Garden City.

Beilman sits in third with 29.5 points (rounds of 79, 80, 81), Ruder tied for fourth with 28.5 points (78, 85, 79), Clark sixth with 27 points (79, 85, 79) and Romme seventh with 23 points (84, 85, 77). The top five at the end of the season are named All-WAC conference players.

The Indians are off until May 2, when they travel to Hutchinson for an 8 a.m. tournament. Their final WAC tournaments are at Great Bend on May 5 and at Liberal on May 13, with a trip to Junction City coming May 8. Regionals are May 19 and will be hosted by Hays High at Smoky Hill Country Club.
