LIBERAL — The Hays High School girls' soccer team squeaked out a close one Thursday, walking away from the cold and windy field in Liberal with a gritty 2-1 overtime victory.
Hays High head coach Chris Michaelis said it got frustrating at times, considering the only shot on goal the Indians allowed ended up in the back of the net.
Hays High (7-2, 4-0 Western Athletic Conference) dominated the possession, posting 13 shots on goal, but needed a goal in the final minute just to tie it.
"It wasn't ideal weather conditions," Michaelis said. "We just had to play through it and hope for the right bounce. We were fortunate today to have the ball bounce right for us."
Liberal scored the opening goal in the 29th minute from Carolina Limon.
Despite multiple attempts, Hays High was scoreless until the final minute. Then with a free kick just outside the box, Brooke Russell scored, kicking it toward the far right post.
The Indians clinched the victory by forcing an own goal in the 86th minute.
Taylor Herman shot it from the left side of the goal outside of the box. A Liberal player redirected it with her head attempting to clear it, but the ball instead landed in the goal.
