GARDEN CITY -- Two weeks ago, the Hays High School girls' soccer team played inhospitable host to Garden City.

Monday the Indians took the same show on the road, dominating the Buffaloes 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference action.

The win clinched the second straight WAC title for Hays.

The Indians ran their record to 11-2 (7-0 in WAC), outhustling and outplaying Garden City in every aspect on Buffalo Stadium's turf.

Hays High dominated the first half with 12 shots on goal (Garden City managed just 4) as the Indians controlled the field with speed and passing.

Hays High's lone first-half goal came at the 26:12 mark when Alexa Brull kicked high and center. Garden City goalkeeper Ashley Richman made a good save -- for the moment -- but the ball hit the top of the crossbar and ricocheted in.

Garden City had two quick corner kicks just five minutes later but could not convert, which seemed to energize the Indians even more than their goal, and the Buffaloes spent the brunt of the half defending, not attacking.

April Johnson scored Hays High's second goal in the 61st minute a cross shot from the 20 yards out into the top right corner of the net.

Hays coach Chris Michaelis felt good about the game and title overall, and was ecstatic about his team's start.

"Our girls have been struggling, up till today, starting games well," he said. "The start was important for us today and how they played the rest of the game with their heads and eyes up."

Securing another league title was one goal for the team's nine seniors, he added.

"They've played together a long, long time. You could see that by how well they played together and how well they've incorporated the underclassmen with their style," he said.

Brull's goal was just what his team needed, Michaelis said.

"Our game plan was to play the ball wide and that cross came in. I don't know who got their foot on it first or which team, but what Alexa did was follow up the goal," he said.

"It was that extra effort that our girls put out tonight."

Hays High hosts McPherson at 4 p.m. today and Dodge City on Thursday.
