After his team allowed a goal late in the first half of Thursday's home opener, Hays High School boys' soccer coach Chris Michaelis wanted a better effort in the second half against Salina Central.
"I challenged them a little bit at halftime ... I felt we needed to put a little more pressure on their defenders from our forwards," Michaelis said. "They did a good job doing that."
Down 1-0, Salina Central got the equalizer with 27 seconds left in the first half on a goal by sophomore Jesse Lennon. But at Michaelis' urging, Hays High scored three goals in the second half for a 4-1 win at HHS field.
Senior forward Devin Schmidt scored twice for the Indians, on a penalty kick in the 41st minute to make it 2-1, then finished the scoring in the 49th, getting a through ball from senior Caden Junk for a breakaway. Schmidt beat Mustang sophomore goalkeeper Barkley Edison inside the far post.
"Caden just played a quick ball right up the center, and I was able to run straight into it," Schmidt said. "It just worked out well."
Schmidt almost had a hat trick; a shot hit the crossbar in the second half. Last year, Schmidt led HHS in scoring with eight goals.
"Devin is doing some great things," Michaelis said. "He's a senior, that's what we expect out of our seniors."
HHS (2-0) also got two goals from freshmen. Lane Clark scored in the 47th and Jordan Windholz opened the scoring with a goal in the 19th minute, his second goal in two games. Windholz also had a chance for another goal Thursday, but had a mishit on an open net.
"Jordan has done a good job stepping in this year, first two games," Michaelis said. "He's definitely going to fill a nice role this year."
Another newcomer, junior transfer Edu Camara -- who scored the game-winner in overtime at Garden City on Monday -- had a goal disallowed in the fourth minute on an offsides call.
Salina Central (0-2) also had a goal disallowed on an offsides call, in the 74th minute.
Hays High opens play in the sixth annual McPherson Invitational Monday at noon against Augusta.
