HHS softball splits with Salina South

SALINA -- The Hays High School softball team split on the road against Salina South on Thursday, losing 9-4 in Game 1 and winning 13-4 in Game 2.
The Game 1 loss was the first loss of the season for the Indians. Hays High had 10 hits in the game, three each from senior Haley Wells and sophomore Tessa Stickel. Wells led the team with two RBI.
Junior Hannah Hearld had a rough game in the circle, going four innings and giving up eight hits and five earned runs with five strikeouts and one walk.
The Indians bounced back in Game 2 with an offensive onslaught. Hays High had 16 hits, led by Stickel's four. Hearld pitched all seven innings of the second game, earning the win. She allowed eight hits and three earned runs while striking out 11 batters.
Hays High, now 5-1, will host Colby on Tuesday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at the Bickle/Schmidt Sports Complex.
