By The Hays Daily News

Two Hays High School softball players netted first-team all Western Athletic Conference honors: seniors Shea Briggs and Katelyn Schumacher.

Hitting leadoff, Briggs, a first baseman, led the squad with a .541 average, 46 hits and 24 stolen bases — and was never caught stealing. She also scored 27 runs and collected six doubles — both second best on the team.

Schumacher, who played shortstop, hit .506 and recorded a team-high 28 runs scored and seven doubles. She also posted 26 RBIs.
Hays High players to earn honorable mention included junior outfielder Julie Balzer, junior catcher Haley Wells and senior outfielder Courtney Storer.

Balzer hit .429 with a .478 on-base percentage. Wells hit .377 and four home runs, and she also was remarkable behind the plate, catching runners stealing 12 times out of 21 attempts.

Storer struggled offensively, hitting .270, but she was flawless defensively, finishing the year with no errors in centerfield and recording 35 put-outs — the most of any Hays High outfielder.

Great Bend and Garden City shared the WAC team title. Great Bend sophomore pitcher Hunter Middleton earned WAC Player of the Year honors, while Garden City's Trina Moquett was named Coach of the Year.
