GREAT BEND -- The Hays High School softball team's season came to an end Tuesday to Class 5A regional runner-up Newton.
The Railers scored two early runs, one off a Hays High error and the other on a home run, and held on for a 5-0 win to advance to Tuesday's title game against host Great Bend.
Newton senior starter Heather Torres allowed just four Hays High hits in the opener. The Indians loaded the bases in the fifth, but couldn't score.
Hays High sophomore Carissa Wickham (5-5) took the loss for Hays High, allowing seven hits and three Newton insurance runs in the sixth inning. Hays High had two errors.
Sophomore Morgan Skiles was the Indians' top hitter with a pair of singles. Hays High finished its season at 8-10, two more wins than last spring under second-year coach Keith Dechant.
Newton went on to lose 1-0 in extra innings to Great Bend (19-2) in the title game. With 18 strikeouts by Great Bend starter Janell Hinson, the Panthers kept it scoreless until winning on an error in the bottom of the ninth inning to advance to state.
