TOPEKA -- The Hays High School boys' swimming team improved on last year's finish at this weekend's state meet.

The Indians scored 23 points to finish 21st. Stilwell-Blue Valley won with 291 points, and Lenexa-St. James Academy was second with 179 1/2. Last year, HHS finished 28th.

In Saturday's finals, HHS junior Derek Drees finished seventh in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.42 seconds for the Indians' top finish. Drees also swam a leg on the 16th-place 200 medley relay (1:52.39). Also on that relay were seniors Nathan Adams and Trever Rohn and junior Connor Hess.

Junior Blake Mathews finished 11th in the 100 free (52.70) and was 15th in the 200 free (1:58.56). Adams finished 16th in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.75).
