HHS boys first, girls third at Buhler

BUHLER — The Hays High School boys' track and field team dominated the Buhler Invitational on Friday.

The Indian boys won with 177 points. Garden City finished second with 104.5.

The Hays High girls came close to winning its portion of the meet as well, finishing five points behind meet champion Garden City.

The Indian girls took third with 99.

On the boys' side, senior Adam Deterding led the way with first-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles (14.70 seconds) and high jump (6 feet, 6 inches), and a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (41.97 seconds) and a third-place finish in the triple jump (41-5).

Sophomore Alex Delton won the 200-meter dash in 22.9 seconds and took second in the 100-meter dash in 11.00 seconds.

Hays High dominated the high jump with Deterding winning and senior Derek Bixenman and junior Aaron Voss taking second and fourth with marks of 6-4 and 5-10, respectively.

Bixenman also took second in the triple jump (41-7.25) and fourth in the long jump (20-7.25).

Senior Cade Sharp won the shot put with a mark of 55-9.75 and took second in the discus with a throw of 161-6, and senior Emilio Mitchell won the javelin with a toss of 171-0.

Senior Josh Brungardt cracked 2 minutes in the 800, placing second in 1:58.86. Sophomore Dominique Carrasco was third in the 110 hurdles in 15.70 seconds, and sophomore Hayden Kreutzer took third in the pole vault with a mark of 13-0.

The 3,200-meter relay, of Brungardt, senior Derek Drees, junior Landon Munsch and senior Ethan Fort, won in 8:28.16.

On the girls' side, junior Wendy Zimmerman took home two golds in the high jump (5-2) and triple jump (34-7.75).

Sophomores Mattison Schlaefli, Kali Pitcock and Ashlyn Parrish took second (16.40 seconds), fourth (16.90 seconds) and sixth (17.05 seconds) in the 100 hurdles, respectively.

Schlaefli won the 300 hurdles in 49.62 seconds, and she also took second in the javelin with a mark of 110-8.

Freshman Haley George took second in the high jump with a leap of 5-0, and sophomore Lexi Summers was fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 31-4.75.

Freshman Audra Schmeidler placed fourth in the shot put (35-8.25), and Parrish tied for fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 51.64.

The girls' 3,200 relay, composed of freshmen Courtney Green, Annie Gonzales and Lacey Elkins and sophomore Summer Smith, took third in 10:45.68.
