HHS cross country teams finish third

GREAT BEND -- Junior Seth Tophoj finished second for the boys and senior Bailey Zimmerman took third for the girls for the Hays High School cross country team in Thursday's season opener at the Great Bend Invitational.

HHS took third in the team standings for both the boys and girls.

The Indian boys scored 97 points, behind Liberal with 33 points and Great Bend with 84. The Indian girls scored 75 points. Great Bend won with 23 and Buhler took second with 49.

Tophoj finished in 16 minutes, 56 seconds. Hutchinson's Chris Wise won in 16:29. Senior Eli Fort also medaled for HHS, taking ninth in 18:06. Junior Dallas Kaiser was 20th (19:05); Freshman Kendall Kandt was 36th (20:23); sophomore Blake Matthews was 40th (20:57).

Zimmerman's time was 16:54. Great Bend senior Rubi Torrez won in 16:09. Sophomore April Johnson was 20th for HHS in 18:29; junior Paige Lunsford was 22nd ((18:39); sophomore Kylee Filley was 29th (19:06); freshman Wendy Zimmerman was 35th (20:11); senior Kelli Oppliger was 36th (20:13).
