Hurricanes third in home swim meet

The Hays Hurricanes swim team placed third out of seven teams on Saturday at their summer home meet, held at Hays Aquatic Park. Teams from Garden City, Scott City, Dodge City, Leoti, Lakin and Holcomb competed.

Morgan Mathews, a senior-to-be at Hays High School, led the Hurricanes with four first-place finishes, coming in the 50 free, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 200 IM.

Megan Flavin, age 12, took first in the 50 free and 100 free; Amelia Jaeger, 9, took first in the 50 free, 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke and 200 IM; and the girls' age 13-14 200 medley relay team of Ana Goodlett, Kailyn DeWitt, Emilee Pfannenstiel and Flavin took first.

The girls' 13-14 200 free relay team of Goodlett, Kyra Polifka-Wilhelm, Pfannenstiel and Flavin took second.

Goodlett, a sophomore-to-be at Hays High, also took second in four individual events: 100 backstroke, 100 breastroke, 100 free and 200 free. Ryan Zhang, 9, had second-place finishes in the 50 free, 50 backstroke, 50 breastroke and 100 free.

Pfannenstiel (50 free) and Yesenia Maldonado (50 breastroke) each had second-place individual finishes.

The Hurricanes, coached by Hannah Page, also had numerous third-place finishes.
