Area players shine in KBCA All-Star game

TOPEKA -- Former Kensington prep star Ethan Kuhlmann was one of five players to score in double figures for the North squad in its 116-111 win over the South in Wednesday night's Kansas Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game in Lee Arena.
Kuhlmann scored 12 points for the North, which was led by former Manhattan standout Jackie Carmichael with 27 points. Former Liberal star Marquez Patterson added 20 points.
Jordan Cyphers, who played for in high school for Wichita Southeast, led the South with 24 points.
In the girls' game, the South defeated the North, 86-75. Former Osborne guard Demi French scored one point for the South, while former Colby standout Lissa Mazanec scored four points and Kimber Weiser of Oakley finished with three points for the North.
Rox sign Hernandez
DENVER (AP) -- The Rockies got two pitching reinforcements Wednesday, claiming Livan Hernandez off waivers from the Twins and activating Jeff Francis from the disabled list. Hernandez, a former World Series MVP and two-time All-Star, was 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA in 23 starts before the Twins designated him for assignment Friday.
