WICHITA -- The K.T. Woodman/Shock Pre-State Challenge started Thursday at Cessna Stadium with high school distance and some throwing events.

Northwest Kansas had several top finishes in the 1A-6A meet that has events split into divisions: 1A-3A, 4A-6A and Elite, which includes the best from all classifications.

Thomas More Prep-Marian senior Heather Ruder was defeated for the first time this season, finishing fourth in the Elite girls' 1,600-meter run, but she lost to three girls from 5A and 6A schools.

Ruder completed the race in 5 minutes, 21.14 seconds, and Wichita-Bishop Carroll senior Katherine Dillard won in 5:11.83.

TMP senior Allison Pfeifer finished second in the 1-3A girls' 1,600 in 5:36.47, and sophomore Cameron Fouts placed second in the 1-3A boys' javelin with a mark of 162 feet, 10 inches.

Hays High School had four top-six finishes.

On the girls' side, sophomore Mattison Schlaefli was sixth, recording a throw of 113-2.

The area dominated in the javelin.

In the Elite division, Phillipsburg senior Seth Derr and La Crosse senior Kip Keeley faced off. Derr won it with a mark of 181-7, and Keeley threw 178-8.

In the 1A-3A javelin, Phillipsburg senior Thomas Olliff placed fourth with 158-11, and La Crosse junior Lucas Moeder was fifth with 157-1.

Phillipsburg sophomore Wyatt Ratzlaff won the 1A-3A boys' 3,200 in 10:46.59, and Phillipsburg sophomore Mindy Gower finished sixth in the 1A-3A girls' 3,200 in 14:07.37.

Victoria senior Jublain Wohler tried out a new event: the boys' 2,000-meter steeplechase, which included runners from 1A-6A. Wohler finished 18th in 7:35.07.
