DERBY -- The Hays Larks' series finale with the Derby Twins on Sunday was suspended with Hays leading 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The game was suspended due to weather and will be finished when Derby visits Hays July 18 prior to the start of the teams' regularly scheduled game at Larks Park.

Hays had dropped two in a row to the Twins after falling 9-5 Saturday night, dropping to 10-7 overall, and 7-7 in Jayhawk League play.

The Larks were one out away from making Sunday's game official, and snapping a three-game losing skid. Derby's final out was at the plate and facing a 3-2 count when the game was called due to lightning in the area. The Twins had a runner at first base.

After Saturday's game, Derby moved to 13-5 overall and 9-4 in league play, second behind Wellington, which moved to 19-1 overall and 12-1 in the Jayhawk after a win Sunday against Liberal.

In Saturday's game, Hays took a 4-2 lead after 2.5 innings, but Derby tied it back up in the bottom of the third, then took the lead for good with a three-run sixth.

Jake Fromson took the loss for Hays in five innings. He gave up seven runs (all earned) on eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Ty Detmer and Aaron Cornell each homered for the Larks. Cornell's was a two-run shot in the Larks' three-run third. Then Detmer plated the Larks' lone run the rest of the way in the fifth with a solo shot.

Detmer finished 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Cornell was 2 for 3. The two combined for five of the Larks' nine hits.

The Larks are at home five times this week. Hays plays host to Dodge City on Tuesday in a 7 p.m. start, then travels to Dodge on Wednesday. The Larks then have a non-league game with Boulder, Colo., on Thursday, then host EL Dorado for a three-game set this weekend. Saturday is Larkstoberfest/Old-Timers' night at Larks Park, and Sunday is Military Appreciation Night.
