MCAA Week 1 matchups

TMP (1-8) at Ellinwood (3-6)

TMP jumps right into league action in its first year in the MCAA, playing Ellinwood in the season opener.

The Class 3A Monarchs, under first-year coach Jon Borer, will go with the spread offense. Junior Nick Hammeke (4 TDs, 6 INTs) returns at quarterback after starting the final seven games in 2009.

Class 2-1A Ellinwood is a run-oriented team, using the flex bone attack. The Eagles return senior Kyle Corbett at QB. Monte Doll returns as the team's coach after being co-coach from 2001-05, when Ellinwood won two district and three league titles.

Larned (2-7) at La Crosse (7-3)

Larned enters its first season in the MCAA this fall, but opens the year with a non-conference game at La Crosse.

Larned, a Class 4A school, has senior Alex Hopkins at QB to run the wishbone option attack. Hopkins replaces Chase Smith, last year's leading rusher (1,285 yards), who graduated.

La Crosse, which made the 2-1A playoffs last year under first-year coach Jon Webster, returns its leading rusher. Senior running back Marcus Moeder rushed for 1,520 yards in 2009 in the Leopards' veer offense.

Hoisington (9-2) at Sedgwick (7-3)

It will be a battle of contrasting styles when two 2009 playoff teams meet in the season opener in non-conference action.

Hoisington uses the double wing, a run-oriented attack, while Sedgwick goes with the no-huddle, spread option.

Last year, Hoisington beat Phillipsburg 35-6 in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs before losing 14-7 to Scott City. The Cardinals return seven starters on offense and six on defense.

Sedgwick, which has had three straight winning seasons, lost 35-28 to Hillsboro in the last year's first round of the 3A playoffs. The Cardinals return six starters on offense and five on defense.
