Monarchs sweep Ellis

ELLIS — The Hays Monarchs Legion baseball team picked up a 13-3 (4 innings), 9-1 (5 innings) sweep of Ellis on Wednesday night.
The sweep pushes Hays to 4-1 this season, and the Monarchs are off until June 12 when they travel to Dodge City.
In Game 1 on Wednesday, Taylor Wasinger finished 1 for 2 with four RBIs and a double, while Ryan Schippers, Braiden Werth and Ricky Hockett each drove in a pair of runs. Hays had a 3-2 lead after one, then drove in four runs in the second and six in the third to set the run-rule.
Kameron Schmidt (2-0) earned the win on the mound. He gave up two earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
In the nightcap, the Monarchs used a 7-run fifth inning to break open a close game, and earn the run-rule victory after five.
Ryan Schippers, Werth and Liam Stults each drove in a pair of runs, and Wasinger added another double and RBI to his night. Werth, Gottschalk and Stults each finished with two hits.
Stults (2-0) picked up the win in all five innings. He gave up one earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts.
