Monarchs split at Hoisington

HOISINGTON -- The Hays Monarchs baseball team split its doubleheader Friday against Hoisington.

The Monarchs, in their fourth outing of the season, won Game 1 15-6 in six innings, but fell 7-6 in the nightcap.

The split moved Hays to 3-4.

In the opener, the Monarchs scored in every inning played but the fifth. The Monarchs put the game out of reach with a four-run sixth to set the run-rule, then shut down Hoisington in the bottom half.

Cameron Brin and Taylor Rome had three hits each, while Ryan Schippers, Kameron Schmidt and Liam Stults each had two. Ryan Schippers scored four runs. Brin, Ryan Schippers and Stults also recorded doubles while Rome had a triple. Brin, Grant Romme, Jordan Gottschalk and Rome each drove in a pair of runs. Ryan Schippers picked up the win in five innings. He gave up all six Hoisington runs (three earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts and a walk. Schmidt pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

In the nightcap, Hays was down 7-5 entering the seventh, but scored a run in a near rally. Brin took the loss in four innings pitched as Hoisington put up five runs in the first inning to pull away. Hays scored two runs in the third and fifth, and one each in the fourth and seventh.

Ryan Schippers drove in two runs with a home run. Romme and Rome each had two hits as well.

Hays next hosts Colby at 6 p.m. Monday at TMP Field.
