GREAT BEND -- The Hays Monarchs split their doubleheader Wednesday against the Great Bend Chiefs.

Hays (4-5) took Game 1, 5-3, then fell in the nightcap, 3-1. The Monarchs rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the sixth to claim the Game 1 win.

Shane Zimmerman, who missed two doubleheaders last week, returned and went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and picked up a save in a third of an inning of relief of starter Pierce Schippers (2-2). Ryan Schippers had a pair of hits and drove in a run, while Jordan Gottschalk, Taylor Wasinger and Grant Romme had RBIs.

Pierce Schippers pitched 6.2 innings and gave up three earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

In the nightcap, Zimmerman took his first decision in the loss. He pitched six innings and gave up all three Great Bend runs (two earned) on two hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Offensively, Cameron Brin had two hits for the Monarchs, who had just five in the game.

Braiden Werth, Kameron Schmidt and Pierce Schippers each had a hit. Brin drove in the Monarchs' lone run with Hays trailing 2-0 in the fifth.

The Monarchs travel to Russell for a 6 p.m. doubleheader Friday.
