Area roundup: Hoxie outlasts Trego in 3-OT district opener

WaKEENEY -- The Hoxie High School football team and Trego battled through three overtimes in their district opener Friday night. Hoxie tied the game in the fourth quarter, then scored the only TD of the third overtime to claim a 34-28 win.

Down 22-16 in the fourth, Steven Yergey-Dible broke free for a 58-yard run with 9:56 to play in the game to tie things up. Both teams were scoreless in the first overtime, but each posted a TD in the second. Hoxie quarterback Chase Kennedy scored from four yards out to put Hoxie up, but Trego senior Cameron Staples answered with a 6-yard run. In the third overtime, Kennedy found Tyler Kaus to put the game away.

Yergey-Dible finished the game with 148 yards on 18 carries, while Kennedy rushed for 69 on 21 attemtps. Kennedy also connected on 11 passes for 95 yards and two scores.

In Victoria, the Knights team picked up a win in their district opener, beating Sylvan-Lucas, 58-12, ending the game with time left in the fourth quarter. Junior quarterback Sam Ottley rushed for 201 yards and six touchdowns, and threw for 35 yards and another score, while Bryan Dome added 144 yards rushing in the contest.

The Knights put up 26 points in the second quarter to take a 26-0 lead. Clayton Roth added 99 yards on eight carries for Victoria.

In Ellis, Norton moved to 4-1 with a 39-8 victory against the Railers. Dalton Miller and Jacob Brooks each scored two rushing touchdowns, and Austin Hager connected on field goals of 30 and 34 yards. Ellis' lone score came on a seven-yard pass from Blake Hudson to Cadyn McCoy.
