SMITH CENTER - Smith Center High School senior quarterback Kody Molzahn took a vicious hit in Friday's 34-13 season-opening home victory against rival Norton. No flag was called, but the Redmen coaches weren't happy with the play.

"When they ripped up on my helmet, my chinstrap just came all the way up my face and bloodied my nose and my lip and ripped it open, and I bled the whole game," Molzahn said.

However, Molzahn, also a starting defensive back and one of the team's captains, remained in the contest.

"He is a good leader," senior lineman Jordan Shockley said. "He has always been our leader since junior high. I think he will continue to play tough and I don't think he will come out anytime soon."

Molzahn threw for 53 yards, ran the offense effectively and recovered a fumble late in the contest.

"He is a warrior and he just will continue to be one for us," first-year Redmen coach Darren Sasse said. "I know his attitude and he will just continue to do that for us. He had about everything going wrong. He is going to look ugly for a couple weeks here, but I think he will take it."

After the game, his uniform pants had multiple blood stains and streaks and his nose was red.

"It's just Redmen football," senior running back Grant Lambert said. "You never give up on your guys. You always go out there and just play every down. He did a great job at quarterback, not staying out and playing hard."

"I just put it off as sweat and just kept going and just kept pushing through it," Molzahn added.

Lambert with big day

Smith Center senior running back Grant Lambert finished with one of the best starts by any area player with 19 carries for 142 yards and four rushing touchdowns and a 40-yard interception return for another score. Lambert broke multiple tackles and ran hard.

"Before the game, you can tell that he is ready to go and he is a tough runner," Shockley said. "He is a bowling ball. He will come at you full speed and throw a shoulder into you. He a good player."

As well, Nick Lehmkuhl stepped in at fullback and delivered a solid performance. He had a massive, legal hit on a Norton player earlier in the contest and gained tough yards throughout the game. He finished with 16 carries for 42 yards.

Extra Points

Norton played two quarterbacks in sophomore Jordan Dole and junior Kendall Miller. Dole, a Nebraska transfer, showed a strong arm, but both players struggled with turnovers. ... Former Norton standout Terrell Lane led all junior college players in rushing yards last season for Hutchinson Community College. Lane was supposed to go to East Carolina, but had some academic issues. He was a Norton assistant coach Friday and is expected to go to ECU in the winter.
