Hays High golfers fail to make state as team

SALINA -- The Hays High School boys' golf team finished four strokes away from a state qualification Monday at Salina Municipal Golf Course in the Class 5A Regional Championships.
The Indians finished in fourth place, with the top three teams qualifying for the Class 5A state meet next week in McPherson. Hays High shot 340, four strokes behind McPherson. Salina South (326) won the regional crown, with Hutchinson (327) placing second.
Freshman Trey Herman and senior Shelby Steffen did qualify individually for the Indians. Herman finished in third place at the regional, shooting an 81. Steffen finished with an 85 to qualify.
Senior Travis Kleweno shot an 87 to round out his career at the regional. Freshman Nick VonLintel (88), junior Zach Patterson (87), and senior Jason Ball (88) also competed.
Salina Central's Thatcher Keast shot a 76 to win the individual regional title.
Class 4A
At Pratt, Colby and Goodland finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the final team standings. Colby shot a 374, while Goodland finished with a 378.
Russell shot a 410 to finish 10th in the Clay Center regional at Manhattan with no individual qualifiers.
The 4A state meet is at Stagg Hill Golf Course in Manhattan.
Class 3A
At Lakin, Phillipsburg junior Jeff Jarvis won the individual title with a 79, leading the Panthers to a 355 to win the team title. Host Lakin shot a 359 to take the other qualifying spot.
Thomas More Prep-Marian also competed, but had no state qualifiers. The Monarchs finished eighth with a team score of 452.
Norton's Preston Herman finished third with an 87 to qualify for state, while Phillipsburg's Joe Monroe finished with a 91.
The Class 3A state meet is at Salina Municipal Golf Course.
Class 2A
Led by a runner-up individual finish for senior Nolan Smith, the WaKeeney-Trego golf team finished first in the Ellis regional.
The Golden Eagles shot a 354, followed by Osborne (375) and Hill City (400); they both qualified as state teams.
Trego placed four golfers in the top 10. Atwood and Plainville each qualified two individuals with Zach Ruda (88) and Elijah Kastens (97) qualifying from Atwood, and Justin Lacy (92) and Ross Copeland (97) from Plainville. The other individual slot went to Stephen Bellerive of Stockton (98).
Osborne's Ryan Sturgeon won the individual title with a 79.
The 2A state meet is at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City.
Class 1A
Weston Vogel, who finished first, and Jared Stoecklein, who finished fourth, led the Ness City Eagles to a second-place finish at Montezuma and the Eagles qualified for state.
Vogel finished with an 82 at Crooked Creek Country Club, while Stoecklein finished with an 85. Greensburg won the team title with a 393, while Ness City shot a 397.
At the Hoxie Golf Club, Quinter took home top team honors with a 352, while Hoxie and Tribune-Greeley County took the next two qualifying spots.
Wheatland-Grinnell's Landon Stephens took home top individual honors with a 74, while Brewster's Jance McKee also qualified with a second-place 76. Sharon Springs' Jeff Hennick (81) and Winona-Triplains' Brett Gfeller also qualified with fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively. Brewster's T.J. Preston also qualified with a 91.
The Class 1A state meet is at Dodge City Country Club.
Sand Greens
Downs-Lakeside finished second on its home course to qualify for state, while Mankato-Rock Hills won the team title. Lakeside shot a 327, while Rock Hills finished with a 314. Bird City-Cheylin finished third.
The sand green state meet will be played in Mankato.
