McClatchy-Tribune
Former Kansas State star Mitch Richmond was announced Monday as a member of the latest Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class.
Richmond's election had been reported last week and he is in attendance at the Final Four, where the announcement was made Monday.
He will become the fourth person with Kansas State ties to be elected to the Hall of Fame, which is in Springfield, Mass., joining legendary coaches Jack Gardner (enshrined in 1984) and Tex Winter (2011), along with former player Bob Boozer, who entered as a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic team.
Also announced as members of the newest Naismith class were former Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson, former Maryland coach Gary Williams and NBA Commissioner David Stern.
Richmond played two seasons at Kansas State after transferring from Moberly (Mo.) Community College in 1986 and amassed 1,327 career points. His 786 points in 1987-88 stood as a school season record until 2008, when it was topped by Michael Beasley.
That season, Richmond helped lead the Wildcats to a school record-tying 25 victories and a spot in the Midwest Regional championship game.
Richmond flourished in the NBA as one of the game's premier shooting guards. He was league's rookie of the year in 1989 as a member of the Golden State Warriors.
In a 14-year pro career, Richmond averaged 21.5 points, four rebounds and 3.6 assists. He was an NBA All-Star six times, all with the Sacramento Kings.
