La Crosse, Victoria pick up wins to open season

ELLIS -- Levi Morss rushed for 182 yards and a touchdown, helping defending Class 2-1A runner-up La Crosse Leopards earn a 16-6 road win agains the Ellis Railroaders on Friday night.

Morss was one of five La Crosse running backs to earn a carry as the Leopards posted 270 yards on the ground, while sophomore quarteback Jack Garcia passed for 39 yards on seven attempts. Garcia also ran in a score in the third quarter.

Quarterback Blake Hudson ran in the Railers only score from 67 yards out.

Ellis travels to Plainville this week, while La Crosse hosts Hoisinngton.

In Macksville, the Victoria Knights opened the season with a 34-20 win against perennial contender Macksville. The Knights got 111 rushing yards from junior quarterback Sam Ottley on 19 attempts. Ottley scored two rushing touchdowns and connected with Dalton Dreiling on a 27-yard TD pass in the second quarter.

Victoria (1-0) had a 20-12 lead at halftime, before putting the game out of reach with 14 points in the third on a one-yard run from Ottley and a 21-yard run by Bryan Dome. Victoria has its home opener Friday against St. John.
